Guide
Japanese is usually set on a fixed square grid, so kerning matters mainly for proportional kana (the palt and kern features), small kana such as ッ and ャ, and punctuation. The preset covers hiragana and katakana, not kanji.
Pair kerning in Japanese kana is limited. Kana are set on a fixed em square by default. Some designs kern kana for proportional setting (Hiragino adjusts 5–10% of pairs), but that is an option, not a convention, so it is not benchmarked.
The workbench above opens with the Japanese preset. Open your font to check whether it adjusts any of these pairs at all, and switch to spacing strings to compare each glyph's fit. Your font never leaves this device.
